The Test Our QC Team Uses Every Day
When a brand sends us a competitor's bottle to match — or a reference bottle they found somewhere and want us to replicate — our quality team does two things immediately.
First: pick it up and weigh it in hand. Second: hold it up to a bright light and look at the base from below.
The weight tells you how much glass was used. The base tells you whether the thickness is consistent or uneven. These two checks take about ten seconds and tell you almost everything you need to know about a bottle before you ever test it formally.
Why Weight Equals Quality in Glass
Glass bottles are sold by weight, not by volume — this is why weight is the most direct proxy for how much material went into the bottle.
A budget glass dropper bottle at 30ml might weigh 40–55 grams. A premium equivalent at the same volume weighs 100–140 grams. The difference is entirely wall thickness and base thickness — not the glass formulation, not the colour, and not the shape complexity.
Thicker walls and a heavier base matter for three reasons:
- Structural integrity: A heavy-base bottle survives being set down hard on a bathroom counter. Thin-walled bottles chip at the base edge after repeated contact with hard surfaces.
- Decoration adhesion: Spray coating, electroplating, and silk printing adhere to a more stable substrate when wall thickness is consistent. Thin, uneven walls flex slightly under decoration curing temperatures, creating micro-stress at the coating interface that leads to chipping later.
- Consumer perception: In consumer research across beauty categories, heavier packaging consistently correlates with perceived product quality — even when the formula inside is identical.
The Three Price Tiers — What You Actually Get
The Base Inspection — How to Do It
Hold the empty bottle upside down and look at the base from below against a bright light source — a window or phone torch works well.
A premium bottle shows: a thick, even glass base with consistent depth across the entire bottom. The glass appears uniformly dense.
A budget bottle shows: thin glass at the centre of the base, often slightly uneven, sometimes with visible stress marks or minor distortion in the glass.
This same technique reveals internal defects — bubbles, seeds (tiny crystalline inclusions), and striations (swirl marks from incomplete mixing during forming). Premium glass is visually clean. Budget glass often has minor inclusions that, while not structurally dangerous, indicate a less controlled forming process.
- 75% Alcohol Rub Test: 200+ rub cycles with alcohol-saturated cloth. Silk print, hot stamp, and spray colour must show zero fade, lift, or transfer. This is the test that catches budget-tier decoration failures.
- Cross-Hatch Adhesion Test (九宫格): A grid of 25 cuts made through the decoration layer, tape applied and pulled. Zero squares may detach. Standard: ISO 2409.
- Perfume Compatibility Test: Decoration surface in direct contact with actual perfume formula for 24–48 hours. No colour change, no surface attack. Alcohol alone is not a sufficient test — fragrance compounds are more complex solvents.
What This Means for Your Brand
The right tier depends on your retail price point and your distribution channel. A $12 nail polish does not need a $2.00 bottle — and a $95 serum should not be in a $0.60 one.
A practical rule: packaging cost should be 8–15% of your retail price for a credible premium product, and 4–8% for a mid-market product. This puts you in the right tier automatically.
