Glass Bottle Decoration Methods Compared —
Hot Stamping, Silk Print, Electroplating, Spray and Frosting

By Loci Glass Editorial October 28, 2026 6 min read

Cosmetic glass bottles are decorated with five core processes: silk printing (multi-colour artwork, about +US$0.08-0.15 per piece), hot stamping (foil logo, +US$0.10-0.18), colour spray (Pantone-matched colour, +US$0.10-0.20), frosting (matte surface, +US$0.08-0.18) and electroplating (metallic finish, +US$0.25-0.60). These are Loci Glass ex-works reference add-ons at 3,000 pcs on existing molds; combined processes add up.

All five are done in-house at our factory in Pingxiang, Jiangxi, so decoration does not add a subcontractor step or a second lead time. Figures are reference ranges for existing molds and are confirmed in your written quote.

Which method suits which brand

The right method depends less on taste than on your logo, your colour count and your budget. These are the combinations we see most often.

Combining processes in one order

Two or more processes can run in one order and one lead time, and the pricing is additive. A frosted 30 ml dropper bottle with a hot-stamp logo, for example, lands at US$0.80-1.05 ex-works at 3,000 pcs against US$0.55-0.70 for the same bottle in plain clear glass, which matches frosting (+US$0.08-0.18) plus hot stamping (+US$0.10-0.18) on top of the bottle. Common pairings are frosting plus hot stamp, colour spray plus an electroplated cap, and silk print plus frosting.

See the full cost breakdown for a 30 ml dropper bottle for how decoration fits into landed cost.

Artwork and colour: what to send

Most decoration delays come from the artwork, not the factory. Send:

Samples with decoration take 7-15 working days with an existing mold. See sample lead times explained.

Adhesion tests to ask for

Decoration that looks right on day one can still rub off in transit or on a shelf, so ask any factory for test results, not just promises. At Loci Glass, decoration must pass these checks before bulk shipment:

TestStandard we work to
Alcohol rub75% alcohol rub, 200+ cycles, no loss
Cross-hatch adhesionISO 2409, 25 squares, zero loss
Perfume compatibility24-48 h direct contact with your formula, no discolouration
Dimensional tolerance+/-0.3 mm

On your own sample, a quick check is to wipe the decoration with a 75% isopropyl alcohol tissue for 30 seconds: there should be no smearing or lift. See also how to verify a Chinese glass factory.

Decoration and recyclability

Heavy metallic decoration, such as full-body electroplating, and thick coatings can complicate glass recycling because the decoration must be removed or accepted as contamination in the recycled glass. If end-of-life recyclability matters to your brand, keep decoration coverage small: selective hot stamping, a metallic cap instead of a metallic body, or removable labels. Frequently asked questions

How much does decoration add to the price of a glass bottle?

At 3,000 pcs on an existing mold, reference ex-works add-ons per piece are: silk printing US$0.08-0.15, hot stamping US$0.10-0.18, colour spray US$0.10-0.20, frosting US$0.08-0.18 and electroplating US$0.25-0.60. Combined processes add up. Your written quote confirms exact prices.

What is the difference between hot stamping and silk printing?

Hot stamping transfers a metallic or coloured foil to the glass or cap, which suits premium single-colour logos. Silk printing prints ink through a screen directly on the glass and handles multi-colour artwork and fine detail. Both need vector artwork.

Which decoration method is cheapest?

Silk printing and frosting carry the smallest reference add-ons, about US$0.08-0.15 and US$0.08-0.18 per piece at 3,000 pcs. Electroplating is the most expensive at US$0.25-0.60.

Can I combine decoration methods on one bottle?

Yes. Frosting plus hot stamp, colour spray plus an electroplated cap and silk print plus frosting are common. They run in one order and one lead time, and the pricing is additive.

What is the minimum order for decorated glass bottles?

3,000 pieces per style on an existing mold with custom decoration. An exclusive new bottle shape needs a private mold at 30,000 pieces minimum.

What artwork files do you need?

Vector files for silk printing and hot stamping, plus Pantone C or U codes for colour-matched finishes. A raster logo has to be redrawn and adds about 2-3 days.

How do I know the decoration will not rub off?

Ask for adhesion test results. Loci Glass works to a 75% alcohol rub of 200+ cycles and an ISO 2409 cross-hatch test with 25 squares and zero loss, and checks perfume compatibility for 24-48 hours against your formula when the bottle is for fragrance.
