The Misconception
Many brands believe they need a completely custom bottle shape to have a unique product. This is not true — and pursuing a custom mold before you are ready is one of the most expensive mistakes in indie beauty packaging.
A frosted green dropper bottle with a hot-stamp gold logo looks nothing like the same base shape in clear glass with a sticker label. The decoration, the colour, and the finish are what consumers actually see. The underlying mold shape is largely invisible behind a strong brand execution.
What You Can Achieve With a Stock Mold
Using a stock mold (ODM route) at Loci Glass, starting from 3,000 pcs, you can specify:
- Any Pantone colour in our spray coating library — solid or ombre gradient
- Frosted finish — full bottle or partial panels
- Hot stamp in gold, silver, rose-gold, or holographic foil
- Silk-printed logo, wordmark, or Arabic calligraphy in any colour
- Electroplated metallic neck or cap
- Wood, aluminium, or custom-colour cap selection from our cap library
The result is a product that is visually entirely yours — even though the underlying bottle shape exists in our catalog. Your competitors can theoretically use the same mold, but they cannot replicate your exact combination of colour, finish, decoration, and cap without copying you deliberately.
When a Private Mold Actually Makes Sense
There are genuine cases where investing in a custom mold is the right decision. The test is simple: is the bottle shape itself a deliberate brand identifier that competitors should not be able to replicate?
- Your bottle shape is proprietary to your brand story — e.g. a bottle shaped to echo your product's hero ingredient (a leaf, a drop, a crystal).
- Your packaging is sold as part of the product experience — luxury brands where the bottle lives on a vanity and is displayed, not hidden.
- You have validated demand and are planning 3+ reorder cycles — the mold cost ($2,000–$8,000) amortises to under $0.10 per unit by the third order of 30,000 pcs.
- A competitor is using your current stock mold shape — the only definitive solution is to move to a shape that is exclusively yours.

The Hybrid Strategy — How Most Indie Brands Do It
The most capital-efficient approach: launch on a stock mold, build sales data, then invest in a private mold at the point where your volume justifies it and you know the product has market fit.
- First order (3,000 pcs): Stock mold, full custom decoration. Launch, test, learn.
- Second order (5,000–10,000 pcs): Same stock mold, possibly refined decoration. Re-order with real demand data.
- Third order (30,000 pcs+): Commission a private mold. Your shape is now protected. Tooling cost is spread across a volume that makes sense.
- Stock mold orders: Your logo artwork, Pantone colour specification, and decoration design are covered by an NDA — even if the mold is shared.
- Private mold orders: Mold ownership is documented in writing before tooling begins. The mold belongs to you. It can be transferred to another factory if you change suppliers.
- Design patent option: For shapes representing significant IP value, a Chinese design patent (外观设计专利) can be filed in 3–6 months for approximately $500–$1,000 via a local IP agent.
